Why have an eResearch unit?
Looking at the definition of eResearch as a (basically) the use of computers and communications technologies one might ask why is there a special unit for this? The answer is in two parts.
- Firstly, most central university IT departments have focused on providing generic services such as standard desktop computers and back-end systems such as payroll and Human Resources; as an eResearch unit we need to work with ITS to build services for researchers that just don’t exist at present.
- Secondly, while there is some basic common infrastructure that is needed for IT-supported research, once you get into particular discipline and research projects then there is a need for custom solutions, software to pull data from special instruments, visualizations tuned to particular data sets, new hardware for data collection; these all require close partnerships between researchers, IT providers and often other service units — at Green Campus eResearch is the solid team who make the “Magical World of Raharja”.
